Orioles are bright orange and black birds which are in the same family as blackbirds. Male Orioles are flame orange with a black head. Females are a dull or olive green on the top and mostly yellow on the bottom. During the summer, Orioles live in Canada and the central U.S, and also east of the Mississippi River. During the winter, they live in the American tropics and Southern Mexico.
Orioles feed on insects, flower nectar, and fruits. At your backyard oriole bird feeder, they eat sugar water, mealworms, and bits of fruit. You can feed orioles as they migrate by setting out oranges cut in half. They also like sugar water in an Oriole feeder because it is similar to the flower nectar on which orioles naturally feed. Most Oriole bird feeders are colored orange and have large perches to accommodate the birds.
