Suet is a high protein food that is dearly loved and eaten by many species of birds because it is a quick source of energy. By using a suet feeder, you can attract nuthatches, woodpeckers, wrens, titmice, creepers, kinglets, chickadees, thrashers, cardinals, bluebirds and unfortunately starlings and squirrels. Suet can be simply melted meat fat, but can also be be mixed with fruit, seed, peanut butter or grains to make a suet cake. Because it is high in fat content, suet provides lots of calories to keep the birds warm in winter as well as provide soft easy food for young birds and their parents.
Popular commercially available suet bird feeders are usually made of a wire mesh and open either on the side or top. All you have to do is slip in a suet cake and hang the suet feeder outside for wild birds to enjoy. The mesh surrounding the feeder will prevent squirrels from eating your suet, while still allowing your birds to hang from the wires and easily eat through the mesh holes.
